The base Z1 is not useless — it handles lighter and older titles and emulation fine — but paying flagship money for the cut-down GPU is the trap. If the price delta is small, take the Extreme; if the only affordable option is the base Z1, size your expectations to older and less demanding games, and treat it as a value pick rather than a flagship.
