The base Z1 is not useless — it handles lighter and older titles and emulation fine — but paying flagship money for the cut-down GPU is the trap. Cheap sequential storage vs faster random I/O
UFS is the meaningfully better onboard storage, and the difference shows up exactly where it matters: random reads, which drive load times and texture streaming, not the sequential numbers a spec sheet leads with. On a device pushing PS2-era and up, eMMC can become the bottleneck that makes an otherwise-capable chipset stutter. eMMC is not disqualifying on a budget retro handheld running lighter systems, and a fast microSD card can carry a lot of the library either way — but when two devices are close and one has UFS, that is a real point in its favor. Buy the storage type for the ceiling you actually intend to hit.

For handhelds, the rating that actually matters is random I/O, and that means the A-class: A1 sets a floor most retro and many PC-handheld libraries never exceed, while A2 raises it — but A2’s advantage needs host support to show up, and on hardware that lacks it A2 behaves like A1 with a bigger label. U3 and V30 describe sustained sequential speed, which matters more for high-bitrate video capture than for loading games. The honest buying rule: a reputable A1 or A2 card from a known brand, sized to your library, beats chasing the top V-rating. Counterfeits are the real risk — buy from a trusted seller and verify capacity.
