ROG Ally X Review: Battery, TDP, and the Real Performance Band

Asus doubled the battery and quietly fixed the rest. We grade the Z1 Extreme performance tier, the real 80Wh battery bands at stated TDP, the 120Hz screen, and the Windows tax.

ROG Ally X Review: Battery, TDP, and the Real Performance Band

The original ROG Ally had a great screen, competitive performance, and a battery that tapped out before a train ride did. The ROG Ally X is Asus admitting that, and fixing the one number that mattered most. It is less a new device than a corrected one — same core silicon, roughly doubled battery, and a long list of quiet ergonomic repairs. This review grades whether the correction is enough to make it the default Windows handheld, and where the Windows tax still bites.

PASS: the battery fix is real, excellent 120Hz screen, more RAM, better ergonomics. CAUTION: it is still Windows, still runs warm, and the top trims cost real money.

The spec check

The chip is the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme — an eight-core, sixteen-thread Zen 4 CPU with a twelve-CU RDNA 3 GPU — the same part as the original Ally and, effectively, a Steam Deck-beating tier when it is fed enough power. Asus did not chase a new APU; it chased efficiency and endurance instead, and paired the chip with 24GB of LPDDR5X-7500 (up from 16GB) and a standard M.2 2280 1TB SSD that is far easier to upgrade than the original's cramped 2230 slot.

The headline fix is the battery. The pack doubled from 40Wh to 80Wh, and the results are exactly what physics predicts. NotebookCheck-class testing and Tom's Guide both document the jump: in the PCMark 10 gaming battery test the Ally X runs about 3 hours and 4 minutes, against the original Ally's 1 hour 43 minutes. In plain terms, that is 2-3 hours in demanding titles and 5-6-plus hours in lighter fare, depending on your TDP setting — the chip runs a configurable 13-30W envelope. This is the single most important spec on the sheet, because the original's battery was the reason people returned it, and Asus doubled it without doubling the weight. That is the correction that makes the Ally X worth discussing.

The screen carries over and remains a strength: a 7-inch 1080p IPS panel at 120Hz with variable refresh (FreeSync) and 500 nits. Against the Steam Deck OLED's 90Hz 800p HDR panel, this is the higher-resolution, higher-refresh, brighter-in-SDR option that trades away OLED contrast and HDR. Which you prefer is a genuine toss-up and comes down to whether you value refresh and sharpness or black levels and HDR pop — a good example of why we grade screens on more than one number.

Battery, in practice

The 80Wh figure is only useful if you can translate it, so here is the translation. At the Ally X's lower "Silent" and "Performance" presets (roughly 13-17W), lighter and older titles, indie games, and 2D fare comfortably clear five hours and often more, because the chip is sipping rather than gulping. Push into "Turbo" (25W on battery, 30W plugged) for demanding AAA and you are back to the 2-3 hour band the PCMark 10 test captures. The lever you control is the TDP slider, and the Ally X gives you enough battery that dialing down to a playable-but-efficient setting is now a real option rather than a desperate one — which was not true of the original. That is the difference between a battery you plan your session around and one you forget about. It is also why any single battery number is meaningless without the wattage printed next to it.

Emulation ceiling

As an x86 Windows machine in the Z1 Extreme tier, the Ally X sits at the top of the practical emulation ceiling for consumer handhelds. Full-speed emulation through the PS2, GameCube, and Wii generations is routine, everything older is trivial, and Switch-class emulation is strong on a wide range of titles, with the usual per-title exceptions rather than a guarantee. Because it can sustain a higher TDP than a Steam Deck, it has marginally more headroom for the hardest sixth- and seventh-generation titles — though you pay for that headroom in watts and fan noise. The x86 architecture keeps compatibility mature, since desktop emulators target it first. The Ally X is a superb machine for a library you already own — it just is not the reason to buy a Windows handheld, since native PC gaming is.

Ergonomics & build

The Ally X is a case study in unglamorous, welcome fixes. Consensus across PC Gamer, Laptop Mag, and Tom's Guide is that Asus improved the grips, refined the D-pad, relocated and cooled the previously overheating microSD slot, and quieted the thermals — all while keeping the device comfortable and reasonably light for the class. It is a genuinely nice handheld to hold for long sessions, with better button feel than the original. Dual USB-C (one full USB4 with an OcuLink-adjacent external-GPU path via a supported dock) adds flexibility the Steam Deck lacks.

The consensus caveat is heat and fan noise under load — inherent to pushing a 30W APU in a small chassis — and a device that is still on the larger side. Neither is a flaw so much as the cost of the performance tier.

Support & firmware

Asus is a major, domestically-supported brand, which is a real advantage over the import handhelds elsewhere in this class: US warranty, retail returns, and RMA that does not cross an ocean. That is worth pricing into any comparison against a crowdfunded flagship.

The caveats are Windows-shaped and honest:

  • Armoury Crate SE. Asus's control-layer software has a long history of being clunky and occasionally buggy. It has improved, but it remains the weakest part of the experience and the thing most likely to frustrate you on day one.
  • The Windows tax. You inherit updates, drivers, background processes, and a desktop OS that was never designed for a 7-inch touchscreen. Nothing about the Ally X escapes this; it is the price of Windows game compatibility, including anti-cheat multiplayer titles the Steam Deck cannot run.

Where it sits in the class

The Ally X's competition is no longer the original Ally — it is the Steam Deck OLED below it and the MSI Claw 8 beside it. Against the Deck, it trades SteamOS's low-friction polish and OLED screen for more raw performance, a sharper 120Hz panel, and full Windows compatibility. Against the Claw 8, it is the AMD answer to Intel's Lunar Lake efficiency play, and the two trade blows depending on title. The Ally X's argument is balance: it is the Windows handheld that fixed its worst flaw without breaking anything else, and it does not ask import-brand support risk of you. For most buyers who specifically want Windows, it is the safe default.

The honest cons

  • Still Windows. Update and driver overhead, a touch-hostile desktop OS, and Armoury Crate's rough edges come standard.
  • Runs warm and audible under load. The cost of a 30W APU in a small body.
  • Price. At ~$799 it is meaningfully more than a Steam Deck OLED, and you are paying for performance and Windows, not a better screen.
  • No OLED or HDR. The panel is excellent but LCD; contrast fans will prefer the Deck.

Verdict

The ROG Ally X is the ROG Ally that should have shipped first. Doubling the battery turned a device with a fatal flaw into the balanced default of the Windows handheld category, and the ergonomic and RAM fixes are the kind of unshowy improvements that matter every single session. Buy it if you want Windows game compatibility, a sharp 120Hz screen, and real battery life from a brand with domestic support — and if you have made peace with Windows itself.
