MSI's Claw 8 AI+ is Intel's efficiency answer to AMD's handhelds. We hold the Lunar Lake claim to the numbers: per-title frame rates, the real 80Wh battery band at stated TDP, and the one caveat emulation-first buyers must check.

MSI Claw 8 Review: Lunar Lake Efficiency, Held to the Numbers

The first MSI Claw was a cautionary tale: a promising Intel handheld undone by immature drivers and disappointing frame rates against AMD's established parts. The Claw 8 AI+ is MSI's second swing, and it changes the terms of the argument by changing the chip. This is Intel's Lunar Lake efficiency pitch in handheld form, and the interesting question is no longer "can Intel compete" but "does the efficiency claim survive contact with the numbers." It largely does. This review is about where it does, where it doesn't, and the one caveat that still matters most for emulation.

PASS: genuine flagship performance, class-leading efficiency, an excellent 8-inch screen, and thermals MSI clearly reworked. CAUTION: it is expensive, it is Windows, and Intel's emulation driver history deserves a check.

The spec check

The chip is the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V — a Lunar Lake part with an Arc 140V integrated GPU, paired here with a large 32GB of LPDDR5X-8533, a 1TB SSD, Thunderbolt 4, and a microSD reader. On raw performance the Claw 8 AI+ is not merely competitive; in several titles it leads. XDA's and PC Gamer's testing at a 17W envelope has the Claw 8 matching or beating the ROG Ally X in demanding titles — roughly 9% ahead in Cyberpunk 2077 (48 vs 44 fps), 19.5% ahead in Red Dead Redemption 2 (49 vs 41 fps), and as much as 46% ahead in F1 23 (51 vs 35 fps) at 1080p low. Those are cited, per-title numbers, not a marketing adjective, and they matter precisely because the comparison is held at a fixed wattage — which is the only fair way to compare two handhelds.

That fixed-wattage framing is the whole point of Lunar Lake, so let's be exact about it. The efficiency story is not that the 258V is unbeatable at full tilt; it is that it delivers flagship-class frames while sipping power, and the battery data backs that up. In PCMark 10's gaming battery loop, PC Gamer and Laptop Mag both clock the Claw 8 AI+ at roughly 129 minutes — about one minute more than the ROG Ally X on the same 80Wh-class pack — while posting equal or better frame rates. NotebookCheck went as far as calling it the best gaming handheld on the strength of that efficiency. In plain terms: expect roughly two hours in a genuinely demanding loop, stretching to five or six-plus hours in lighter play as you dial the TDP down. The 80Wh capacity matches the Ally X; what Lunar Lake adds is more performance per watt inside that same tank.

The screen is a real strength and a quiet advantage over the 7-inch field: an 8-inch 1920x1200 IPS panel at 120Hz. It is larger and higher-resolution than the Ally X's 7-inch 1080p display while keeping the same 120Hz refresh, and reviewers consistently rate it among the best LCDs in the class. It is not OLED, so contrast and HDR fall short of a Steam Deck OLED, but for sharpness and real estate it is excellent.

Emulation ceiling

As an x86 flagship, the Claw 8 sits at the top of the practical emulation ceiling for consumer handhelds: full-speed emulation through the PS2, GameCube, and Wii generations is routine, everything older is trivial, and Switch-class emulation is strong on a wide range of titles, with per-title exceptions rather than a guarantee. The raw silicon is not the limiting factor here.

The honest caveat — and it is the one place an emulation-first buyer should slow down — is the GPU driver, not the chip. The emulation community's consensus has long favored AMD's driver maturity for the widest emulator compatibility, and Intel's Arc drivers are where the original Claw stumbled badly. Lunar Lake's Arc 140V has closed most of that gap, and driver support matured steadily through its life, but Intel graphics still occasionally surface per-emulator quirks that AMD parts do not. If your primary use is native PC gaming, this is a footnote. If you are buying specifically to emulate a demanding system, check current per-emulator reports for the Arc 140V before you commit, rather than assuming parity. Ergonomics & build

Consensus across PC Gamer, Laptop Mag, and Club386 is that MSI meaningfully improved the hardware over the first Claw: better grips, a more comfortable in-hand feel for an 8-inch device, Hall-effect sticks, and — importantly — reworked thermals that keep the machine cooler and quieter than its predecessor under load. For a device with a larger screen, it manages its size well, and the build quality reads as genuinely premium.

The consensus caveats are the physics of the class: an 8-inch handheld is not a small one, and pushing a flagship APU still generates heat and some fan noise under sustained load. Neither is a defect so much as the cost of the performance tier, and MSI has clearly done the engineering work to keep both in check.

Support & firmware

MSI is a major, domestically-supported brand, which — as with Asus and Lenovo — is a real advantage over the import handhelds elsewhere in the market: US warranty, retail returns, and RMA that does not cross an ocean.

The caveats are Windows-shaped and honest:

  • MSI Center M. The control-layer software has improved but remains the least polished part of the experience, and the thing most likely to need attention early on.
  • The Windows tax. Updates, drivers, background processes, and a desktop OS on a handheld touchscreen all come standard. That buys you full Windows game compatibility, including anti-cheat multiplayer titles a SteamOS device cannot run, but it is not friction-free — and on Intel, driver updates are the mechanism that unlocks performance over time, so staying current matters more here than on a mature AMD platform.

The honest cons

  • Price. At around $999 for the top configuration, it is a premium buy against a Steam Deck OLED or a base Ally X.
  • Still Windows. Update and driver overhead, plus MSI Center M's rough edges, come standard.
  • Intel emulation caveat. Drivers have matured, but AMD remains the safer default for emulation-first buyers.
  • No OLED. The 8-inch panel is excellent but LCD; contrast fans will prefer the Deck.

Verdict

The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is the device that vindicates Intel in the handheld category. Lunar Lake delivers flagship frame rates while matching AMD's best on battery, the 8-inch screen is a real advantage, and MSI fixed the ergonomic and thermal complaints that dogged the first Claw. Held to the numbers, the efficiency claim is true. Buy it if you want the fastest efficient Windows handheld and you value the larger, sharper screen — and if you have made peace with Windows and the Intel driver story.
