The Legion Go answers a question no other handheld maker asked out loud: what if the screen were simply enormous? At 8.8 inches it towers over the 7-inch class, and in isolation the panel is one of the nicest displays you can hold. Everything else on the spec sheet, and every trade-off in this review, flows from that one decision. The big screen is the identity, the headline, and the tax all at once. This is a review about grading that bet honestly.

The spec check

The silicon is the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme — the same eight-core, sixteen-thread Zen 4 CPU with a twelve-CU RDNA 3 GPU that powers the ROG Ally X. That is a known, capable quantity: HotHardware and GamesRadar both grade it as a strong handheld performer that runs modern AAA at handheld settings and older or indie titles with ease. Lenovo pairs it with 16GB of LPDDR5X and a 1TB SSD. On raw performance, the Legion Go is not the differentiator; the chip is a commodity in this class.

The screen is the differentiator, and it is where the "specs are marketing" trap lives. The panel is an 8.8-inch QHD+ (2560x1600) IPS display at 144Hz, rated around 500 nits — on paper, the highest-resolution, highest-refresh screen in the mainstream handheld field. Here is the honest part the marketing skips: a Z1 Extreme at handheld wattage cannot drive modern games at native 1600p, let alone at 144Hz. In practice you play at upscaled 800p-to-1200p with FSR doing the lifting, exactly as you would on a 7-inch Ally X. The 1600p panel earns its keep on the desktop, in 2D and emulated content, and in the sharpness of text and menus — not in native AAA frame rates. Buy this screen for what it is (a gorgeous, spacious canvas) not for a resolution number the APU will never actually render in a demanding game.

Battery is the second reality check. The Legion Go carries a dual 49.2Wh pack, and reviewers are consistent about the range it returns. Two things make that band shorter than the Ally X's on the demanding end. First, the total capacity is smaller (49.2Wh versus 80Wh). Second — and this is the part a spec sheet never tells you — that big, bright 144Hz screen is itself a meaningful power draw before the game engine does any work. A larger, higher-refresh panel is a battery cost as much as a visual upgrade. Any "all-day" claim about this device is quoting a low-TDP, dim-screen scenario you would rarely game in.

Emulation ceiling

As an x86 machine in the Z1 Extreme tier, the Legion Go sits at the top of the practical emulation ceiling for consumer handhelds, and the big screen is a real asset here rather than a liability. Full-speed emulation through the PS2, GameCube, and Wii generations is routine, everything older is trivial, and Switch-class emulation is strong on a wide range of titles, with per-title exceptions rather than a blanket guarantee. The 8.8-inch panel gives sprite art and upscaled sixth-generation 3D more room to breathe than any 7-inch rival, and the detachable right controller's mouse mode is genuinely useful for the menu-heavy strategy and RPG titles that emulation libraries are full of. The Legion Go's signature is modularity of a different kind than AYANEO's. The TrueStrike controllers detach from the sides, each with Hall-effect sticks that dodge the drift problem, and the device ships with a built-in kickstand. The most-discussed feature is FPS mode: stand the right controller vertical on a table and it becomes a mouse-like puck, aided by a wheel on its base. Consensus across GamesRadar, HotHardware, and UltrabookReview is that the build feels premium and laptop-grade, the grips are comfortable, and the detachable-plus-kickstand arrangement makes for a legitimately good tabletop and travel setup.

The consensus caveat is size and weight. This is the heaviest and largest mainstream handheld, roughly 854 grams with the controllers attached, and long sessions ask real work of your wrists and forearms in a way a Steam Deck-class device does not. FPS mode is clever but niche — a party trick most owners try once and rarely build a play style around. The honest read: the ergonomics are excellent for what this is, but what this is happens to be big and heavy, and no amount of good grip design changes the mass you are holding up.

Support & firmware

Here the Legion Go has a real, under-appreciated advantage over the import brands elsewhere in the handheld world: Lenovo is a major, domestically-supported manufacturer. You get US warranty coverage, retail return paths, and an RMA process that does not cross an ocean. On a device in this price range, that is worth pricing in.

The caveats are the familiar Windows-shaped ones:

  • Legion Space. Lenovo's control-layer software is serviceable but not as polished as the hardware deserves, and it is the part of the experience most likely to need patience early on.
  • The Windows tax. Updates, drivers, background processes, and a desktop OS never designed for a handheld touchscreen all come standard. That buys you full Windows game compatibility, including anti-cheat multiplayer titles a SteamOS device cannot run, but it is not zero-friction.

The honest cons

  • Big and heavy. The class leader in mass; wrist fatigue is real on long sessions.
  • Battery is short at high TDP. The smaller pack and power-hungry screen cost you on the demanding end.
  • A resolution you cannot feed. Native 1600p/144Hz is a desktop and 2D spec, not an AAA one on this chip.
  • Legion Space and the Windows tax. Software rough edges plus the usual desktop-OS overhead.

Verdict

The Legion Go is the handheld for the buyer who specifically wants the biggest, sharpest screen in the room and will happily build a session around a nearby charger. As a big-screen, detachable-controller Windows machine with real brand support behind it, nothing else quite matches the display or the tabletop flexibility. But it asks you to carry more weight and accept shorter high-TDP battery life than the balanced default in the class, and it sells you a resolution the chip cannot render in the games you bought it to play.
